Join us on Wednesday, November 6 at 5:30 pm in Room LL430 for a lecture and discussion by Bill Meyers on The Rohingya: People in Peril, a topic rarely covered by the U.S. media.

The world’s largest refugee encampment, located in Bangladesh, holds over one million people.  Over two years ago, the Rohingya, a Muslim minority population in Myanmar, began fleeing from Bangladesh, to escape a vicious campaign of ethnic cleansing. Governments from both countries have repeatedly vowed that a return of the Muslim minority to Myanmar was imminent – but these displaced people remain in a teeming, squalid settlement, too afraid to return to their homes.

Come hear one American’s firsthand observations.  In February 2019, San Diegan Bill Meyers spent one month volunteering in the Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, where he helped with sustainable energy projects and taught English.  More importantly, he observed life in the camp and gained insight into what life is like in a refugee camp.

Learn about the transition of this area from a remote forest to a city of over one million.  Discover what life is like for these refugees and what are their specific issues and challenges.  How do volunteers help and what will the future hold for the Rohingya people?
